1st Annual International Club Potluck Dinner

02/26/08 -

We had a fantastic turn-out for our 1st Annual International Club Potluck Dinner&over 70 people!!!  Let me start by saying a big "THANKS" to all of the staff that helped with set-up, clean-up, and student involvement.  An even bigger "THANKS" to the students for the awesome food and displays from countries all over the world.  I'm sorry we didn't have more time for people to present the items they brought in.  I would like to try again next meeting if everyone is willing.

We're working on posting the recipes from some of the great dishes on the website and will hopefully be finished by the end of the week.  Some of the pictures from the dinner will also be posted some time this week.

We elected our first Club Officers at the meeting.  They are:

President - Juan Hill
Vice President - Joshua J. Rattler
Secretary - Lauren Atherton
Treasurer - Juliet Mc Quire

We will eventually post their contact numbers on the website as well.

Our next meeting will be at the Niceville Campus in March.  We'll hopefully announce a date sometime this week.  Club Officers will work on ideas for that evening.  We are looking at entertainment by a local Japanese Drum Group.  If anyone knows of any other cultural entertainment available in the local community give Ms Nancy Ordonia a call or email at 729-6020 or ordonian@nwfstatecollege.edu.

We're still looking for volunteers for the Spring Festival and Baseball Concession stand.  Please give Nancy Ordonia a call if you can help.  Remember, the concession stand money will help fund the club so we won't have to collect dues every semester.

In April, we're looking at a couple different ideas.  The first is dinner and an NWFSC Jazz concert.  The second is a trip on the Sea Blaster in Destin.  Club Officers will work on the details before the next meeting.

4th Annual Open Mic Night Winners

11/28/07 -

The Northwest Florida State College Chapter of the African-American Student Association (AASA) was proud to host its 4th Annual Open Mic Night Competition on Thursday, November 15, 2007, in the Tyler Recital Hall of the Mattie Kelly Fine & Performing Arts Center. The event began at 7:00 p.m. with an audience of about 40 ready fans and family members.

The Open Mic Night Competition is a celebration of the vocal arts, such as singing and poetry, and those in attendance were not disappointed by the performances. The diversity was amazing! Audience members were captivated by traditional Gullah storytelling, poetry, hard rock music, gospel singing, different forms of rapping, and so much more! During intermission, last year's winner, John Pristell, mesmerized the audience with pieces from his superb, self published book, Boy Versus Girl. Yet, in the end it was the judges who had to make the final difficult decision as to who would walk away as winners. Honorable Mention was bestowed upon contemporary gospel rapper, Terry Miles for his original song, "Conquerors." Third place went to the duet with guitar accompaniment of Nathan Beltran and Brandon Williams singing "O Holy Night," and second place was earned by a quartet of gospel singers called The Angelic Voices of Praise. "The Voices," Miriam McGriff, Rachel McGriff, Kyndra Lewis, and Mariah Lewis, harmonized beautifully to Mary Mary's song "In The Morning." Finally, first place was awarded to the wonderful Gullah Storytelling of Danielle Gadsen who shared her South Carolina Gullah heritage with the listeners.

This year's Open Mic Night was undoubtedly a success, and all eight performances were fantastic. Now, the only thing left to do is wait for next year's contest!

SGA President Welcome

08/21/07 - Welcome back to another school year at Northwest Florida State College. To those of you who are returning students -- I hope this year proves to be as lively and active&and educational&as the last. To those students just beginning at NWFSC, you are in for a wonderful year at a small college with amazing faculty and staff and a bustling extra-curricular life. Student Government Association at NWFSC plays a big part in the on-campus student activities. Every year we plan and run a Fall Fling and Spring Fling on the Niceville campus where free food, activities, and social opportunities are provided. We also host or assist with socials on the other NWFSC campuses. SGA focuses on serving the community with Blood Drives, a Thanksgiving Food Drive, and a Christmas Toy Drive. As all of the clubs and organizations on campus fall under the SGA umbrella, you will find that they too are active in on-campus events. Groups like the African American Student Association (AASA), Christian Apologetics Fellowship (CAF), Radiology Club, Game Club, Film Club, as well as many other organizations, meet often for entertainment, educational, and social purposes. Student Government Association doesnt forget its role as governing body of the NWFSC students; as much as we may enjoy running events geared toward the student body, our SGA has pride in our well-rounded, diverse leaders. Senators work hard to bring the best to the students of NWFSC, whether it is through events, community service, or representative roles on-campus and off. The Northwest Florida State College SGA is part of a larger organization, the Florida Junior Community College Student Government Association (FJCCSGA). Every year members from our SGA travel across Florida to represent the students of NWFSC at various FJCCSGA meetings and conferences. We get a chance to meet with Student Governments from around Florida, participate in leadership training exercises, take a stand on different Florida Legislative issues important to college students, and, given that we are college students, enjoy time to socialize.

Have I peaked your interest yet? Student Government Association and organizations at NWFSC are always looking for more members. The more you get involved as a student, the more enjoyable and successful your college experience will be. There is bound to be a club or organization that fits one of your interests. You can even start your own club. Just stop by the Student Activities office in building K for information. My door is also always open. Feel free to email me or leave me a message on the bulletin board outside my office in building K and I will get back to you as soon as possible. As President, I hope to work with all of you to make this year at Northwest Florida State College the best possible. Sincerely, Kelsey Alderfer Student Government President sga@nwfstatecollege.edu 850.678.5111 ext. 6786
